WUJIE Fusion

“Fusion Vegetarian” is not a phrase heard often. But the popular restaurant, WUJIE, proudly promises this along with a unique food experience, exclusive menus and fresh organic produce.

Is it even possible to find healthy, yet delicious, restaurants in a busy city such as Shanghai?

Fortunately, there is WUJIE: an exciting, upscale, fusion vegetarian restaurant created by Mr. YB Song; the founder of Vegetarian Lifestyle. Its unique menu encourages diners to remain health conscious while still embracing cultural food and experiencing Shanghai’s local offerings.

With a focus on local, sustainable and organic (whenever possible) ingredients, WUJIE (meaning “unbounded” in Chinese) possesses a peaceful, yet contemporary atmosphere that is consistently portrayed – from the food to the interior design. Each of the six floors of its first location in Xujiahui captures the beauty of the Earth’s five elements with water, wood, fire, earth, gold and a completion of the cycle with the return to a water theme for the sixth floor garden. The experience of natural beauty, through both surroundings and a prepared meal, is one that is not easily forgotten.

The à la carte menu is normally delivered via iPad for visitors, but for those who wish to have a more extensive experience, there is a special eight to ten course meal available from their set menu.

Favourite dishes include Fujian Lion’s Mane Mushroom Steak (with a delicate black pepper sauce that is slowly cooked for three days before being served), Mapo Tofu, and an elaborate soup created with 18 different ingredients – including mushrooms, kombu and pumpkin. Even WUJIE’s dessert menu, which includes their gorgeous Mountain Yam Tiramisu, is a hit with every person who comes through the door.

Special dishes are available for people who are Buddhist and do not consume the five pungent roots and every menu item is labelled whether they contain dairy products. Moreover, each menu in their three locations (Xujiahui, Bund 22, and SWFC) gives chefs the unique ability to create their own signature dishes, so be sure to visit each location for exclusive menu options.

Their partnerships with farms in Chongming and Helongjiang guarantee fresh, organic rice and vegetable ingredients, and WUJIE’s in-house tofu kitchen produces a unique variety of over 12 different types of tofu that are perfectly incorporated into popular house dishes.

WUJIE’s menu changes seasonally, giving customers an exciting, diverse experience. In a partnership with Dinghan Medical, WUJIE uses Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doctor recommendations to design their set menus accordingly. Their upcoming summer options will revolve around the theme of “Strengthen Your Heart”, incorporating foods that enhance the body’s health and strength.

Future plans for WUJIE include the possibility of redesigning their menu options to change every two weeks in accordance to the 24 solar terms of TCM – creating a more well rounded menu that improves both health and well being.
