Hotel of the Month: Banyan Tree Sanya

Alexander Charnaud

In theory, travelling to a beach destination guarantees sunshine and shade when needed, and a comfortable and commodious bed at the end of the day. More often than not, the vacation ends in sunburn and disappointment. The Banyan Tree Sanya, however, achieves the seemingly unachievable by creating a holiday experience that lives up to all expectations.

The Banyan Tree brand has a reputation around the world as one of the most luxurious and opulent chains about, and its Sanya location continues this trend by providing a first class experience in every respect. Located on coast of Luhuitou Bay on the southernmost tip of Hainan Island, the hotel and its 49 villas are set amongst coconut palms, a glittering lagoon and its own private beach.

In true Banyan Tree style, the location goes above and beyond by providing a private pool, outdoor bath set in its own lotus pond, rainforest shower and on call buggy service. While there are plenty of things to keep you busy, the hotel really shines when you just do nothing. There are bikes, kayaks, a world class gym and all sorts of other things to occupy your time. Your first challenge will be dragging yourself away from the catatonic state of relaxation created poolside.

If like some the thought of any sort of activity doesn’t appeal to you, then you can convince yourself that you are being active by visiting the hotel’s award-winning spa. With treatments from all over the world as well as offering a range of unique therapies, there are few wants that they cannot cater to. In particular the Hydrothermal Essence treatment is a must. The 60-minute process leads you through a number of water-based treatment rooms where you steam, sweat and soak your way to a healthier body and state of mind.

Options for food are limited but well executed with the all day dining restaurant presenting both Western and Asian influences in their menu. The real treat though is the Thai restaurant Saffron. Considered, rightly, as one of the best of its type in the city, the food is both reasonably priced for a hotel of this calibre and delicious. In addition there are plenty of options for private dining. You are never more than a call away from a romantic beachside barbeque with your loved one or a feast of fish and meat grilled to perfection in your villa.

A stay in Sanya should be great wherever you choose, but why take the risk? The Banyan Tree Sanya is head and shoulders above its completion in terms of location, facilities and level of service, and is the perfect spot for your next session of rest and relaxation.

When we last checked, Ctrip had rates of RMB 1,680 (including taxes) per night for a Pool Villa Room during the month of June. Web: www.ctrip.com
