Young Achiever: Ian Kok

Ian Kok is what you would call an exceptional student. With a keen interest and natural aptitude for science and maths, the 15 year old has notched up an impressive array of awards during his six years at Yew Chung International School. Now studying for the IB, Kok achieved a dizzying five A* grades in his recent IGCSE exams, (including a double A* for his favourite subject, coordinated science). It comes as little surprise then, that he was given an award for achievement in the subject on the recommendation of his teacher. “That motivated me,” says Kok. “It made me even more interested in science.”

And the Year 12’s talents don’t end there. In perhaps his most impressive achievement, Kok gained the highest mark in China for his IGCSE Design and Technology project, which saw him design and make a toy fire engine. A certificate from the University of Cambridge recognising the achievement was presented to Kok during a school assembly.

On top of all this, the young student has recently signed up to be a school prefect – a role which would see him monitor school grounds and act as a YCIS representative. “I want to be a prefect because I’m proud of my school,” he says.

Outside of school, Kok is interested in sport. He enjoys playing golf and badminton in his free time – which despite his impressive achievements, he still claims he has enough of. “I am extremely busy,” he says. “But I do have time to spend with family and friends.” So how does Kok balance study, sport and social time? With the help of a good support network, he says. “The teachers here are very supportive. They help you with any problems you have,” he explains. “And friends are there to help you no matter what.”

On completion of the IB in two years time, Kok hopes to go to university abroad. “I want to study in the UK,” he says. “There are a lot of prestigious universities there.” He plans to study engineering – a move which will set him on the path to his dream job in aeronautical engineering – and his recipe for success is simple: “Never give up.” With such determination, there’s little doubt Kok has a stellar career ahead of him.
