good living: At Home with Peter Lam
Interior decorator, designer and owner of Hot Dog Décor, Peter Lam, has seen his work featured in The New York Times, Elle Decoration China and Home Journal Hong Kong, among other international publications. This month he gives TALK a peek inside his apartment on the banks of Suzhou Creek. Contemporary with retro touches and splashes of vivid colour, much of the furniture is designed by Peter and the decorations are sourced from his world travels. He is known for his ability to mix and match different elements to create unique and surprising looks, with the intent of forming memorable spaces with personality and soul.
Dining Room
Retro Bertoia metal chairs placed across a plush banquette provide a contrasting mix of texture and style. The large pendant lamps are deliberately hung at different heights to create a sense of drama. The covered base diffuses the light so that it's not so harsh. Everyone looks great under soft lighting!
Study
The wall clock is a unique piece – the whole clock turns while the needle stays in the same position. A vintage table is placed next to it to create a contrast with its contemporary design. The posters on the wall are of Peter's favourite cities in the United States. It's a clever use of the names of the neighbourhoods to make up the shape of the cities.
Bedroom
The giant old painting of Peter's beloved niece creates a dramatic backdrop to the bedroom. The bed was designed by Peter and is made of concrete.
