Rebuilding Nepal

After an inspiring Speech Day presentation, by Mr. Peter Dalglish, at Dulwich College Shanghai, my family and I departed from Shanghai life at the end of June to assist in the huge project of rebuilding Nepal. We took medical supplies and money for materials from funds kindly donated by students and parents at the college.
On arrival, the stark contrast between the life we had at home and the lives that the children of Nepal have led was clearly apparent. We witnessed the differences between the city life in Katmandu and the life in Shanghai, high rises, business blocks and luxury hotels were no where to be seen.
As we travelled into the hills we were briefed as to what we should expect when we arrived at the local school. Words could not have prepared us for the experience we had; it was somewhat upsetting. Children, the same age as my younger siblings, working in a school with no walls, bamboo and plastic sheet roofing, no air conditioning, wearing worn clothes and eating small portions of food in the glaring sun and sweltering heat. However, this sad truth spurred my family on to help as much as we could.
We undertook various activities with the children at their school, including teaching English, playing games and sport exercises, along with the task of washing their hair and tending to their injuries.
We also made tables and benches, with the funds provided, so the children could eat together at meal times.
The experience we had as a family of six is an experience that we will cherish and never forget, we created many special bonds and friendships and we definitely encourage others to do the same. We believe that every donation, however small, can have a positive effect in improving the lives of these children for the better.
