In the second floor space once inhabited by Tara 57, a newer, sleeker watering hole has arrived. The name Arcade is a bit of a misnomer for this place in that there are no gangs of gaming fanatics crowding around flashing pinball machines or gripping joysticks. In fact, there’s only one gaming consul (a custom made Winnitron stocked with "indie arcade games") in the whole bar. Look closely though and you’ll see playful nods to the theme throughout the carefully designed space. Even the dark, understated wallpaper has a gaming motif, visible only to the most discerning eyes.

The bar’s carefully crafted appearance aligns well with what its owners are trying to achieve – a cocktail lounge that retains the quirks and intimate charm that too many of its Yongfu neighbors seem to have lost. With that in mind, the drink menu (which is still under construction) is rife with classic cocktails with a twist. The mojito (RMB 75) is made with shisho, or Japanese basil, rather than mint, and then topped with a meticulously made ginger rose, lending the drink an interesting kick of flavour and a punch of colour. Bartender CJ, who has served behind the pine at el Coctel and Constellation, also whips up a heavy-handed Manhattan, replacing the traditional whisky base with its Mexican cousin tequila. Add to that a small, but high quality beer menu with Dead Guy Ale on tap, and alcohol aficionados are sure to come a-calling.

Indie beats selected by owner/DJ Reggie, who is one half of China's highly regarded and hugely popular promotions team STD, set the soundtrack for the bar, which is also equipped for live DJs. For now it mainly caters to friends and private parties, but as Arcade gets established, its sleek space and relaxed vibe should make for a fun addition to the area.
