Even hidden down a lane, this little stand is well known among the locals for its zongzi (bamboo rice wraps). Traditionally these specialty bites are only eaten around Dragon Boat Festival, but the owner, Mrs Fan, wraps traditional zongzi all year round. Try the pork stuffing!

Wei Xiang Zhai

These sesame paste noodles ought to come with a warning. Aided by a little chilli oil kick, they’re downright addictive. You’ll have to battle for a seat with other in-the-know noodle fans during peak dining times, but it’s well worth it for the majiang mian, which rings up at a bargain RMB 8.

Richy

Richy is the spot for locals who like to get down to a mess of hip-hop and haven’t cottoned on to 88 Bar’s brand of kitsch. Tables laden with green tea and Chivas creep practically on to the dance floor, but there’s a miniature stage on the DJ booth if you need space to show off your moves.

Nostalgia is the name of the game at this restaurant. Jam packed with old-fashioned square tables for eight, it sends diners right back through time – and that’s even before they sample the sparerib rice cake. The recipe comes from 1921, and these lean cuts of pork certainly have stood the test of time.
