Shanghai Staycation

The Waterhouse at South Bund

Why:  Quirky, aspirational fun … Oh my God, I can see into the neighbours’ room!

Shanghai’s newest, sleekest boutique hotel, The Waterhouse at South Bund, redefines the concept of a design hotel. By blurring the lines between antique and contemporary, as well as public and private space, the hotel offers guests a new and unique experience. Designed by Neri & Hu, it is set in a refurbished 1930s era building along the Huangpu River next to the Cool Docks complex. The hotel is also home to Table No. 1, a destination restaurant from Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton, of London’s 'maze' fame, a lobby lounge and a rooftop cocktail bar with breathtaking views of Pudong.

With only 19 available guestrooms, The Waterhouse is one of the more exclusive boutiques in town. Each room is furnished with a selection of European and Japanese designer furniture including selected works by Arne Jacobsen. Additionally, most suites have either a private terrace or provide views of the waterfront. As well as easy access to Cool Docks’ shops and restaurants, the hotel is conveniently located near the Fabric Market and the Bund. Overall, it is a wonderful way to experience one of Shanghai’s oldest, most vibrant neighbourhoods, before future development threatens the link to its historical past. Prices for a two-night weekend stay in late September begin at RMB 3,000.
