The World Health Organisation recently classified air pollution as an official carcinogenic, leaving those of us living in the smog of China’s industrial cities with fair reason to be nervous. Surgical face masks and dust masks fashioned from various materials seem to have surfaced in the form of pollution pacifiers, despite proven ineffectiveness without a filter. Here we showcase these decorative symbols, as Shanghai’s hopeless residents attempt to battle air pollution, and the ironic message they portray.
