I think That Shanghai Is Unequivocally The Best Place In The World To Host A Party With The Most Interesting Movers And Shakers

Shanghai’s nightlife is crazy. In fact, the city is crazy. It resembles a lit up Christmas tree;

the streets are buzzing and it’s a place wherethe rich and famous come to socialise and party.

Shanghai does not sleep, so of course it is the most fantastic, exuberant place to host a party.

The city’s nightlife has undoubtedly garnered people’s affections throughout the generations.

Shanghai has been dubbed ‘The Paris of the East’ and, in many ways, I can see a connection between the decadent Paris of the 1920s, and the crazy

proliferation of the nouveau rich now. Obviously, this means that hosting events in the city can be extremely tricky. When parties are bountiful and beautiful what can you do? You have to do something special.

The attractive thing about Shanghai is its international history. It has always been a place facing the sea and facing the world, so it has naturally attracted visitors and investors, leaders and looters. The city’s history has meant that it has a diverse culture, but at the same time it has always ensured that the interests of the best and brightest are of the utmost importance. As a result, Shanghai is filled with diplomats, designers, DJs, Michelin starred chefs and celebrities.

We hosted the Black Swan party last year. It was my way of giving Shanghai something special.

Shanghai was already the place to party but I felt the city needed an opportunity to push its cultural boundaries further. Capote always intrigued me because of the way he used to mingle amongst so

many different social circles – movie stars, tycoons, authors and even critics. This inspired me to create that type of electric environment in Shanghai. I knew that mixing it up would be great for the city.

We followed his grand plan for the 1966 Black And White Ball by putting on a phenomenal party that was lavish, stylish and exclusive! Although I didn’t do anything too crazy, like walking around with a little black book; taking names, deleting names, choosing only those who took my fancy – just as Capote did – I did want to ensure that our invitees had a level of class. The

guest list featured celebrities and great thinkers from Shanghai and farther afield. The atmosphere and wonder of Shanghai made such a gathering possible because the city has such a varied culture.
