Designing Healthy Lifestyles Pavilion
by Susan Evans
As part of our goal to inspire and support sustainable living, we invite you to visit our joint pavilion at the Eco Lifestyles event on 15-17 September. Here you will find a mix of experts and practitioners, opportunities to learn, buy and create sustainably and move towards a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.
With the rapid change in lifestyles in Chinese cities like Shanghai, it’s easy to get disconnected from natural, healthy ways of being. Although it’s not as evident in Shanghai as it is in some developed countries, it is getting easier to find these options and to live well. From food, exercise and products to how to make your home healthier and more comfortable, at the Designing Healthy Lifestyles Pavilion you will be able to reconnect with the best of living.
Living sustainably is the new ‘cool’ in many of the top cities around the world with country leaders and local mayors working towards showcasing their city as a sustainable one. Now Shanghai is joining the ranks of these eco-friendly cities around the globe with the support of the Eco Lifestyles event.
The big difference between the developed world and China is that the former has to reduce its consumption and change its behaviours to live sustainably. Yet China and cities like Shanghai have the opportunity to socially leapfrog other regions and move directly into sustainable lifestyles with all the benefits of a contemporary ‘cool’ way of living. Already many Chinese residents practice sustainable behaviours from informed food choices, TCM and general living behaviours such as: recycling, hanging laundry to dry, wearing thicker clothes in the winter, riding bikes, etc. This life is sustainable, yet has not always been comfortable or a choice. Now it’s time to learn how we can improve the quality of Chinese urban life, continue to economise on energy and costs and safeguard some of these sustainable behaviours.
The key to changing the way people live is education, and the Designing Healthy Lifestyles Pavilion does just that. Starting with its organic and poetic design by Spark Creative, it enables everyone to ask questions, learn, connect and practice how to live a contemporary and sustainable life in Shanghai. Start with why it’s a priority to insulate your home!
What to Expect
The Designing Healthy Lifestyles Pavilion was created for Eco Lifestyles 2011, an event that has already been deemed China’s largest and most comprehensive eco exhibition. The event will be held on 15-17 September and bring together China’s LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) market by assembling industry, government, education, non-profit organizations and consumers to converge ideas, products and services on the benefits of eco-friendly living.
This pavilion is the collaborative effort of three community groups (Eco Design Fair, The Wellness Works and GoodtoChina) to focus more on local small- and medium-sized businesses located in Shanghai that can directly support residents’ needs, offer solutions and help develop healthier living in the city while also educating the consumer on healthier and sustainable choices in Shanghai. Centrally located at the fair, the pavilion’s unique organic and responsible design by Spark Creative, plus its more intimate settings, hope to congregate visitors who want to purchase and trade in sustainable products, adopt more eco-friendly behaviour through DIY learning and be inspired through the examples of pioneering entrepreneurs in the field.
