Summer Travel Supplement: Direct from Shanghai

As the post-Expo tourist boom continues to deliver hordes of tourists to Shanghai, airlines have added new routes and increased the frequency of flights from major cities around the world. Luckily for denizens of Shanghai, the two-way street from Pudong International Airport means there’s never been a better time to fly direct to your next vacation destination.

Atlanta

After a two year hiatus, Delta is re-launching its direct flight option between Shanghai and Atlanta, the world’s busiest passenger airport. In addition to opening a world of Western Hemisphere travel, this new twice-weekly route leads you directly to one of the American South’s most vibrant cities.

Visitors will have their days full enjoying 'Hotlanta’s' unique combination of antiquated Southern charm and modern city living. Sample sodas from around the globe at the World of Coca-Cola, get behind the scenes at one of the busiest news channels in the world with the CNN Center and Studio Tour, or walk amongst history at the Margaret Mitchell House & Museum – the restored Tudor mansion where the author penned Gone With the Wind.

Frankfurt & Munich

Business travellers have reason to rejoice with expanded offerings from Lufthansa to Frankfurt, a key European flight hub and home to the European Central Bank. Known almost more for its airport than the city’s cultural offerings, there will now be two flights a day linking the finance hubs. You may find a better deal on Air China’s direct flights, but Lufthansa’s unparalleled European market coverage may make for a smoother trek if travelling onwards.

It seems like every other car in Shanghai is now a German model, so perhaps it was time to also get a direct route to Munich, where BMW’s headquarters and iconic museum are located. For a better look at German culture, Munich offers the classic Bavarian experience of beer halls and sausages, museums and an endless array of charming architectural treasures. Where Frankfurt is all business, Munich will appeal to history buffs, art lovers and outdoor adventurers.
