Art Scene Warehouse gathers together disparate paintings and sculptures, also under an urban theme. Feng Dakang’s building paintings are a highlight: some of his structures merely lean precariously, while others, the detritus of destroyed neighbourhoods, float away on opaque skies. Also on show are: Du Xinjian’s mystical oil paintings where fish are the major deities; Huang Jie’s dream scenes seen through women’s-face-shaped holes; and Hu Ke’s sexy, bald girl ceramics.

Italian artist Laurina Paperina creates art-smart (some would say smart-assed) cartoons of major icons from the art world, movies and comic books. She describes her characters at “painted irony”, a fitting description for images of Mickey Mouse drawn as an idiot sewer rat, or Jeff Koons being mauled by one of his balloon animal dogs.

Chen Yufei’s oil paintings are faces found in rock formations. The soft, muted colours in his ‘Reboot’ paintings contrast with the strong geometry (and geology) of the subjects. In the late ‘90s Yufei studied at the Academy of Arts in Braunschweig, Germany, making him a natural fit for Galerie Junger, which has its headquarters in Berlin and often shows artists with one foot in Germany and one foot here in China.

Until 15 September. Galerie Junger, 2F T-Gallery, 525 Hengshan Lu. Tel: 5179 5003

At the opening of ‘Police and Her’, a girl in a bath piled high with lilies read from a book of police regulations. She’s gone now, but the group show continues with an engaging cast of characters. In different works, the police in the show are excessive, sexy, ineffective and inebriated, while the various representations of ‘her’ range from vulnerable, to mocking, to heroic. Media is a real mix, including colourful clay figurines and photos printed directly on to building rubble.

Urban Planning is a group that focuses on tightly themed nights with live music and visuals carefully tailored to each party. This will be ROM's debut at the Shelter, bringing a visual and sonic prediction of a digitally-penetrated world. Come listen to Tom Carter, author of CHINA: Portrait of a People, talk about his well-documented journey through China. After two years teaching English in Shandong and Beijing, Carter still felt like he didn’t know the “real” China, so the self-proclaimed nomad put his camera and lifesavings into a backpack and began an epic trek through the Middle Kingdom. Two years, 33 provinces, 56,000 kilometres and several run-ins with the law later, Carter had seen every corner of China and taken over 10,000 pictures of the people who make up the world’s most populous nation. His groundbreaking snapshots were compiled into CHINA: Portrait of a People, the most comprehensive book of photography on modern China ever published by a single author.
