Spa Talk: The Peninsula Spa Sleep Ceremony

Is the fast pace of the city taking its toll on your body clock? Relax and rebalance your mind and body to ensure a peaceful night sleep at The Peninsula Spa.
The Peninsula Spa is widely regarded as one of the best spas in town, benefitting from an excellent and experienced team of expert therapists and service staff, along with a full selection of products from British spa authority, ESPA. After offering ESPA products in Peninsula Spas across the world since 2006, the hotel has now gone one step further and created a spa treatment, in conjunction with ESPA founder, Susan Harmsworth, to improve the sleeping patterns of jet setting travellers.

Recognising that a restful and rejuvenating night’s sleep is an essential part of the guest experience, The Peninsula and ESPA designed a tailor made spa and wellbeing experience exclusively for the hotel chain, which focuses on relaxing and rebalancing the mind. After being rolled out through numerous countries, it is now Shanghai’s turn to benefit from the new wellness programme, with the hotel’s therapists undertaking a one-year training course supervised by an ESPA representative to guarantee the best wellness experience possible.

One of the beauties of The Peninsula Spa is the amount of training and investment they put into their spa staff, ensuring that all treatments, from the moment guests walk into the elegant art-deco spa to the moment they step out, are luxurious and pamper-filled experiences. To this end, we were more than excited to try their new, innovative treatment, unlike anything else on the market.
The Peninsula Sleep Ceremony lasts for 120 minutes and begins with an aromatic bath, using ESPA’s soothing bath oil, to ease tired and aching limbs in the candlelit surroundings of a private spa suite. The therapist then guides meditation and breathing techniques to release physical and emotional anxiety, before beginning a hot stone body massage, focusing on the vital energy points, to release harmful toxins and muscular tension. The treatment concludes with a soothing face and scalp massage, relieving tight jaw and forehead muscles.

We were encouraged to clear our minds and let go of any tension during the treatment, and found ourselves being lulled to sleep at different points throughout the two-hour programme. The calming and tranquil experience certainly enabled us to leave our worries in the spa, and enjoy a deep and uninterrupted sleep that evening.

After the Sleep Ceremony, all guests are welcome to unwind in a relaxation bed in the tranquil sleep room or enjoy a deliciously light yet nourishing lunch from the Naturally Peninsula menu, poolside. A good night’s sleep is an essential part of maintaining a healthy and balanced life, and we believe that everyone could benefit from improving the quality of their sleep in this hectic city. Invest in a bit of “me time” and visit The Peninsula Spa for a Sleep Ceremony treatment.
